The story of the week is a real treat. I was working on the computer in the dining room and loosely paying attention to what was going on in the rest of the house. In the background, I hear a little celebration throughout the house. It was the pee-pee dance being performed by my wife and oldest son, only the words were slightly altered because apparently Billy had pulled a fast one and slipped a poo-poo in to the potty when nobody was looking. Excellent. Dad sees the end of diapers in sight.
As the song gradually unfolds, it begins to migrate from one side of my house to another as the duet heads for the kitchen and to the treats that await little Billy, known in our house as "Nannyland" thanks to my Mother's track record of inviting well behaving kids to pick the candy of their choice when they behave...or just because she's their Grandmother. As the song ends, I begin to hear a chant coming from the kitchen as Billy starts yelling, "Nannyland!!! Nannyland!!! Nannyland!!!"
And just then, it happened. While nobody was watching, like a thief in the night, A.J. slipped in under the wire and peaked into the potty. By the time Antoinette spotted him, it was too late. You see, it turns out that toddlers that are A.J.'s age have two grips. Either they are not holding something or they are crushing it in their hands. In this case, A.J. was smashing the recently acquired "deposit" between his fingers with a Kung Fu grip.
When Antoinette saw this happening, mostly afraid of what A.J. might do next with his new toy, Antoinette began screaming, "A.J....NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!" A.J.'s response was to immediately start crying, thinking he was in trouble, and then to flee for his life!!! Realizing what was happening, Billy began crying and screaming, "A.J., that's my poo-poo!!!"
By the time I looked up and realized what was going on, all I could see was A.J. bolting across my field of view with "something" in his hands, screaming and crying followed closely by Antoinette chasing him screaming for A.J. to stop, followed by the caboose in this crazy train, Billy, who was more concerned about the condition of his poop that was pilfered from the potty. Wow!!! If only the video camera were running for that one.
As for Billy, getting back to the main theme, his potty training is really taking off now. I would say he pees in his diaper roughly 10% of the time with 90% of the time, he's going in the potty. He's spending significant amounts of time throughout the day in toddler underwear and hasn't had a single accident since we started this new system. #2's seem to be a little more effort. He's only knocked that out twice, and both times not really going very much only to get a diaper on and finish the job. Our goal is to have him 100% potty trained by the end of Summer before he's three and a half, so he's doing a great job at this point.
A.J.'s big change was going to be making the transition to the big boy bed as we converted his crib for the final time into a toddler bed. Antoinette pointed out that she thought maybe we were jumping the gun on that one, so we dipped into the history of this baby blog to see just how old Billy was when he moved him into his big boy bed. Turns out she was right and I was way off the mark. Billy didn't make it into a toddler bed until he was 19 months old, which means A.J., who is not quite 15 months old, has another 4 months until we make that move. So he's being rescheduled on that transition until the end of Summer, about the same time we want Billy to be potty trained.
