Grandpa Lionhood Delivers!!!

Billy's baby room just took a turn toward the Sports nut. Believe me, if his Daddy has anything to say about it, you can bet it won't be his last. Call it brainwashing if you like, but I have a good feeling that this little guy is going to want to watch the Buckeyes and Bears with his Father on the weekends, likely to the dismay of his Mother. Maybe she won't catch on to my plan.

Anyway, this is your Baby Room update for the week as we are pretty much caught up. Grandpa Lionhood has sent a Care Package that any Daddy-to-be can be proud of. In it, and displayed in this picture, are Billy's first football which is a genuine leather Wilson ball, an Easton T-ball bat, a Louisville Slugger T-ball glove, and an official Major League baseball in a stand. Outstanding additions to his room that are right up my alley.

Moving to the Baby and his Momma, Billy's brain is beginning to wrinkle and fold. For those of you that have seen brains on TV before, this is definitely a good thing. These wrinkles and folds are what make human beings the premier cognitive species on the planet. Evolutionary forces (if you believe in that sort of thing) acting on cerebral development ran into a problem. The human skull was not expanding as fast as the human brain it encased wanted to. So the brain began to evolve folds and fissures that give it the telltale look that you recognize from seeing brains on TV, etc. Adding these wrinkles and folds expands the brain's surface area, which is key to cognitive capacity. This is why more intelligent species of animals tend to have more wrinkled brains. It has a great deal to do with maximum surface area in minimal space. So wrinkle away, little brain. Wrinkle away.

Billy's finger and toenails have finally completed their general growth and development. Now they will continue to grow from here like a typical fingernail/toenail, which will result in them needing a serious trimming after the birth. Then, we have several months of figuring out the best method to try and stop him from slicing his face up with the little daggers. Oh joy.

Another key development is the likely taking over of red blood cell development by the bone marrow. He is also starting to shed his lanugo, which was the fine hair that was coating his body we discussed in earlier posts. This is believed to be due to his increased body fat/temperature regulation ability, which means he doesn't need the extra warmth that the hair would allow for. Not sure how much that would help anyway. Billy's eyes are open and he's attempting to look around the best he can. With limited vision and a pretty dark home, its rather difficult to see much of anything anyway, but shine a bright light in there and you may get a reaction.
