Approaching the Half Way Point...

Billy's senses are exploding now. He's becoming more aware of the world around him every second. Smell, taste, hearing, vision, touch...all becoming more acute with every passing moment. There is plenty of research to suggest the he can now hear his Momma's voice, so every word from her mouth begins the strengthening of a bond that will allow that voice to reassure and calm him for the rest of his life. Kidneys are running full tilt and recycling amniotic fluid in preparation for urine production and excretion. Hair on the scalp has begun to sprout, although if there is any at birth in any kind of abundance on his head, I'll be surprised. Daddy and to some extent, Mommy, were both bald at birth. The vernix caseosa, a waxy coating covering the fine lanugo hair, has begun to develop on the skin to protect the skin from pickling in the amniotic fluid.

Brown baby fat continues to be packed on as the little guy is shifting into a growth phase in which he will literally expand as is for the next 20 weeks or so, proportionally speaking. The skeleton is growing thicker and stronger and the muscle tissue continues to increase its density. Kicking and punching internally have become more frequent now, but still feel like fluttering inside Momma. He can be startled now with outside noises if they are loud enough. Finally, the little guy is a sleeping machine, with estimated sleep requirements of up to 20 hours a day. New pics of Momma are coming in a day or two. I promise. That belly is really starting to pop now!!!
