This picture is of the feet of little Amillia Taylor. To date, she is the youngest premature baby to survive. She was born in 2007 at just 21 weeks, where Antoinette is today. This is what little Billy's feet look like as of this morning, ten toes and all. There are some other goings on including a completed circulatory system as his blood flow is adequately capable of reaching all parts of his body now. Also, the placenta is similar in size to the baby and the umbilical is getting thicker and stronger to accommodate the growing fetus.
Now that the baby is fully shaped, it is time for that growth we talked about. This week, the baby shoots up to about 7.2 inches in crown to rump length, or about the size of my open hand and he's nearly 10.5 ounces in weight, or 2/3 of a pound. Average Mom weight gain corresponding to this growth is about 10-15 lbs. Antoinette is not near that mark yet, as you can probably tell from some of those "all belly" pictures, the next of which is coming just after Thanksgiving.
Here's an interesting fact that has nothing to do with Antoinette, but is still worth noting. At this stage of pregnancy, women have been known to develop a condition known as Pica, which is a desire to eat unusual things. We're not talking pickles and ice cream here, folks. People with Pica can crave and try and eat things like cigarette ashes, charcoal, and dirt. So Fathers-to-be, keep an eye on your pregnant Mothers-to-be, especially when they're in the garden!!!
